This was a serious adrenaline rush for the young people! Safe in helmet and harness the rip cord is released and they feel the G force as they fall into an exhilarating massive swing back and forth. This gave the young people a chance to conquer their fears and test their nerves, being winched as high as they dare! The weekend away was a great success in developing relationships and creating an open space for the young people to talk about issues that otherwise may be hard to talk about. The 10 young people have recently graduated from the 3 month academy and we are confident that they have been given a good foundation on which to build healthy God intended relationships. The next academy starts in january and is being ran in Pensby. Email zoe@wirralyfc.org.uk for more information.

Wirral has one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy and abortion in Europe and is home to 1000’s of young people with low self esteem who ’give themselves away’ to multiple sexual partners in an attempt to quell their sense of worthlessness. At Wirral YFC we find this situation heartbreaking and believe that the local church needs to act when faced with these issues. As a part of the church in Wirral we have decided to act in the best way that we can and We are doing this through the Romance Academy.

In September 2005 you may have seen ‘No sex please we’re teenagers’ on BBC2. It followed the lives and loves of the very first Romance Academy made up of 12 North London teenagers and a number of Christian mentors. During their time in the Romance Academy, the young people where challenged to re-evaluate their worth and self-esteem and explore the benefits and frustrations of a sex-free lifestyle …an impossible task or so they thought?

Through Romance Academies across the UK it has become clear that issues of sexual intimacy and identity act as a doorway for young people into all other areas of their lives. What those who have taken part in the project have learned has therefore-e stretched far beyond sexual health awareness. Young people have been given a safe space for exploring, challenging and trying out new ideas and attitudes and ultimately developing values and skills that they can take into the whole of their life. This approach focuses on developing young people’s character and emotional resilience.

For more information on Wirral YFC’s Romance Academies please contact Zoe Povall by emailing zoe@wirralyfc.org.uk or by calling the WYFC office on 0151 647 8400.

New Romance Academy starting on Thursday 14th January 2010 at the Hope Centre, Fishers Lane, Pensby, Wirral 5.00 – 6.30pm.

Wirral YFC are involved in numerous activities and projects in partnership with various organisations, churches and statutory bodies. As well as these we currently have 8 main projects which we are working on.

3 Area Projects

We have 3 area projects with a full-time member of staff overseeing each: Zoe Povall in North Wirral, Sarah Hockley in West Wirral and Rob Pitts in East Wirral. Our areas projects :

Deliver high quality lessons, assemblies and conferences in schools.

Support young people in schools with outreach activities, lunchtime and after school Pulse (Formerly CU) groups and extra-curricular sessions.

Work alongside the local church to mentor, nurture and disciple young people.

Play a key strategic role in the co-ordination of youth work provision in their areas.

2 SDA’s

Specialist Discipleship Academies or SDA’s for short are Wirral YFC’s response to our desire to work alongside the local church in the nurturing and disciplining of young people.

Local churches do an amazing job at nurturing and discipling young people and Wirral YFC have some skills, experience and training in particular areas which we can throw in to the mix. We currently have two flagship SDA’s, our Romance Academy and our Worship Academy. Please click on the links for more information on those.

Pulse

Wirral YFC are involved in around 15 Christian Unions across the Wirral and the main aim is to support Christian young people in schools and provide non-Christians with an opportunity to explore the Christian faith.

We have found in recent years that the term CU or Christian Union has become outdated and gives the false impression that these sessions are exclusive to a ‘union’ of Christians. With this in mind we have put a strategy together which we believe will have a very positive effect on schools through supporting young Christians as they put their faith into action whilst still providing a place for others to find out more if they wish. The name for this new strategy is Pulse.

If you would like to get involved in a Pulse group or to find out more information please contact us.

Catalyst

In some ways Catalyst is a series of events aimed at gathering young people from Wirral and further afield in one place to worship and pray together… But that is only the start. Catalyst the event is just one part of a strategic response to a burning desire to see young men and women of God rise up and transform what it means to live in the Wirral.

Catalyst was born out of a longing to see God do something awesome (in its true sense) among the young people in Wirral. Our vision is to inspire and encourage young Christians to seek after Gods heart and His purpose for their lives and we wish to work alongside local churches as we together seek to raise up a generation of passionate worshippers who stand firm on God’s Word and value the power of prayer. Our hope is that Catalyst will also support and enhance the great things that are already happening throughout the Wirral and provide an opportunity for youth leader networking.

For more info and for dates please visit www.catalyst4wirral.com

Training & Resources

For more information on the resources and training we offer please visit http://www.wirralyfc.org.uk/resources/

Zoe has worked with Wirral Youth For Christ for over 2 years and is currently working in North Wirral Secondary Schools. Zoe has lived on the Wirral all her life and spent her years in education at Weatherhead High School where she took her GCSE’s and A Levels. Feeling unsure about what was next, Zoe took a gap year to take time to seek what God had planned for her and she became a full time volunteer at The Foundry, a church in Widnes. It was during this year Zoe discovered her passion and heart for and sharing her faith in Jesus with those she met, on the streets, within the church and in local secondary schools. After her year was finished she felt God call her back to the Wirral and started working full time with Wirral Youth For Christ.

Zoe is particularly keen to see young people value and respect themselves and others as unique, complete people created by God for the purpose of relationship with Himself. Zoe is on a journey discovering what right, God intended relationship looks like, with God and others and wants to help others do the same. Through this desire, Zoe delivers relationship and sex education in schools and runs a 3 month discipleship course, The Romance Academy, to help young people explore a life of respect, value and integrity.
